When did Saint Claire live: 1193 - 1253
BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Claire, born in Assisi (Italy), grew up in wealthy circumstances. She left her parental home on Palm Sunday 1212 to take a vow to live in complete poverty. She later founded the Order of the Poor Clares, which she famously defended against the Saracens. She is said to have driven the attackers away with prayers. Another legend says that she was confined to bed due to a serious illness and was therefore unable to attend the Christmas mass in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. Although she was physically absent, she still experienced the mass in a miraculous way. Her unshakeable faith is strongly emphasized in her letters to St. Agnes of Prague.
