St. Anthony the Great, also known as Anthony the Hermit, was born around 251 in Egypt. He is considered one of the most important fathers of Christian monasticism. After the death of his parents, he sold his inheritance and withdrew into the desert to lead an ascetic life of prayer and meditation. His spiritual wisdom and deep faith in God attracted numerous followers who gathered around him. Legends tell of temptations by the devil, which he overcame through his strong belief. St. Anthony the Great passed away at the remarkable age of 105 years.

St. Anthony the Great is the patron saint of domestic animals, livestock breeders, butchers, basket makers, and swineherds. He is also invoked against skin diseases and the plague.
