BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Gregory the Great, born in Rome, was one of the most significant popes in church history. Initially a prefect of Rome, he chose a monastic life before being elected pope in 590. He implemented numerous church reforms and promoted missionary work, particularly in England. He is also famous for the Gregorian chant named after him. Saint Gregory the Great died in 604 and was soon canonized.
