BIOGRAPHY:
Saint James the Greater was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of John the Evangelist. Called directly by Christ, he was among the closest disciples and witnessed the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. According to tradition, after Christ's death and resurrection, he preached the Gospel in Spain. He was the first apostle to be martyred, being beheaded in Jerusalem around AD 44 by order of King Herod Agrippa I. His relics were later transported to Spain and are now venerated in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, making it the destination of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.
