BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Burkhard was the first bishop of Würzburg and played a crucial role in the Christianization of Franconia. He likely came from a noble family in England or southern Germany. In 741, he was consecrated as a bishop and founded many churches, including the monastery of St. Andrew, which later became the Benedictine Abbey of Münsterschwarzach. St. Burkhard was a close confidant of St. Boniface and assisted him in church reform. After many years of missionary work, he retired to the monastery on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance, where he is believed to have died around 754.
