BIOGRAPHY:
Saint John the Evangelist was the son of Zebedee and Salome and the younger brother of James the Great. Originally a Galilean fisherman, he and his brother were called by Jesus to follow Him and belonged to the inner circle of the twelve apostles. In Church tradition, he is often identified as the "disciple whom Jesus loved," who rested at Jesus' side during the Last Supper and was the only apostle to remain beneath the cross, where the Mother of God was entrusted to him. His status as a saint is based on his work as an apostle and his authorship of the fourth Gospel, three epistles, and the Book of Revelation. After his ministry in Ephesus and exile to the island of Patmos, John was the only apostle who did not die a martyr, but passed away of natural causes at a great age in Ephesus.
PATRONAGE:
St. John is the patron saint of theologians, evangelists, writers, booksellers, bookbinders, notaries, and winegrowers, as well as the patron of Christian friendship.
SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of St. John are the eagle, which symbolizes the spiritual height and theological vision of his Gospel, and a book as a sign of his writing activity as an evangelist. He is also often depicted with a chalice from which a serpent emerges, referring to an attempted poisoning that he survived unharmed through a sign of blessing.
