BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Julia, born in Carthage (present-day Tunisia), was sold as a slave to a pagan in Corsica during the Vandal invasion. Although he tolerated her Christian faith, he was forced to hand her over to the governor Felix under Diocletian, who ordered her to be tortured. He had her breasts cut off and she was nailed to the cross. According to legend, her breasts were thrown against a rock, from which a miraculous spring then gushed forth. The "Saint Julia Fountain" is a popular destination for pilgrims.
PATRONAGE:
St. Julia is the patron saint of the island of Corsica, Brescia, Bergamo and Livorno; of torture victims and the diocese of Perpignan-Elne.
SYMBOLISM:
The symbols of San Julia are a book as a sign of wisdom and an abbot's staff, which represents her spiritual guidance.
