BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Cassius was a Roman officer whose name is of Latin origin and means either "the deprived" or "from the Cassian lineage." Together with his companion Florentius, he likely served in the famous Theban Legion, a Christian unit of the Roman army under Gereon. Due to his unwavering Christian confession, he refused the imperial sacrificial cult and remained faithful to his belief. Around the year 304, he suffered martyrdom in Bonn along with his companions at the site where the Martyr's Chapel (Marterkapelle) stands today. His veneration has been documented since the 4th century, and the Bonn Minster was later built over his original burial site, where his relics still rest in a shrine today.
