BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491 in Spain into a noble family. He became an officer in the Spanish army, but after a severe battle injury, he underwent a deep conversion. During a period of reflection, he wrote his famous "Spiritual Exercises," a foundational work of Christian mysticism. In 1534, he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with a group of companions, dedicating his life to missionary work, education, and spiritual guidance. Pope Paul III officially recognized the order in 1540. Saint Ignatius led the Jesuits until his death in 1556 in Rome. His motto, "Ad maiorem Dei gloriam" (For the greater glory of God), remains central to Jesuit spirituality today.
