BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Gotthard was born around 960 in Reichersdorf, Bavaria. He joined the monastery of Niederaltaich at an early age, where he received a thorough education and later became abbot. Under his leadership, the monastery underwent a significant reform following the Benedictine rule. In 1022, he was appointed bishop of Hildesheim, where he dedicated himself to church renewal, the construction of new churches, and the promotion of education. He was known for his generosity and deep spirituality. He died in 1038 and was canonized by Pope Innocent II in 1131.
PATRONAGE:
St. Gotthard is the patron saint of travelers, road workers, masons, and the sick. He is particularly venerated in the Alpine regions, where the Gotthard Pass is named after him.
