BIOGRAPHY:
St. Marcellus I was born in the 3rd century in Rome and served the Church during a time of intense persecution against Christians. After a prolonged vacancy, he was elected Bishop of Rome in 308. During his pontificate, he worked to reorganize the Church and reintegrate Christians who had renounced their faith during the persecutions. His strict approach led to tensions that culminated in his exile by Emperor Maxentius. Marcellus I died on January 16, 309, in Rome.
