BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Ludger, also known as Liudger, was born around 742 in Zuilen near Utrecht. He came from a wealthy Frisian family and received his education at the cathedral school in Utrecht and in York under Alcuin. After his ordination, he dedicated himself to missionary work among the Frisians and Saxons. Around 800, he founded Werden Abbey, which became an important religious center. In 805, he was consecrated as the first bishop of Münster. Ludger was known for his peaceful missionary methods and emphasized education and the founding of monasteries to spread the Christian faith. He died on March 26, 809, in Billerbeck and was buried in the abbey he founded in Werden.

St. Ludger is the patron saint of Groningen and Deventer in the Netherlands, East Frisia, the Diocese of Münster in Germany, and Werden.
