BIOGRAPHY:
St. John of the Cross was born in 1542 in Fontiveros, Spain. He joined the Carmelite order and was ordained a priest. Together with St. Teresa of Ávila, he worked to reform the order and founded the Discalced Carmelites. Because of his reforms, he was persecuted by his fellow friars and imprisoned. During his captivity, he wrote some of his most famous mystical works, including The Dark Night of the Soul. After his release, he continued his mission until his death in 1591. He is considered one of the greatest Christian mystics and poets.
