BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Polycarp of Smyrna was the Bishop of Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Turkey) and one of the most important Church Fathers of the 2nd century. A disciple of the Apostle John, he served as a crucial link between the Apostles and early Christians. His deep commitment to the Christian faith earned him great respect but also enemies. During Christian persecutions under Emperor Antoninus Pius, he was arrested and sentenced to death. It is said that when they attempted to burn him alive, the fire did not consume him, so he was ultimately killed with a sword. His relics were venerated and helped spread Christianity.
