BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Erik IX of Sweden was a devout king dedicated to spreading Christianity in his kingdom. He ruled Sweden from 1156 to 1160 and promoted laws based on Christian principles. St. Erik was especially known for his justice and generosity. He supported the mission to Christianize Finland and led a crusade to convert the Finns. His death was the result of a conspiracy against him: while attending Mass in church, he was attacked and murdered by his enemies. After his death, he was venerated as a martyr and saint, and his tomb in Uppsala became a major pilgrimage site.
