BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Benno of Meißen was born around 1010 near Hildesheim. Little is known about his early years, but it is believed that he received his education at the cathedral school in Hildesheim and possibly joined the Benedictine Order. In 1066, he was appointed Bishop of Meißen and served in this position until his death in 1106. During his episcopacy, he worked tirelessly to Christianize the Slavic population in the region and promoted the construction of churches and monasteries. Despite political turmoil, particularly during the Investiture Controversy, he remained faithful to his mission and was known as a peacemaker. After his death, he was canonized in 1523, and his relics were later transferred to Munich, where he is venerated as the patron saint of the city.

St. Benno is the patron saint of Munich, Bavaria, the Diocese of Dresden-Meißen, as well as fishermen and weavers.
