BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, likely originating from Cana in Galilee. In the Gospels, he is referred to as Nathanael, with Bartholomew being considered a surname. According to tradition, he preached the Gospel in various regions, including India, Mesopotamia, and particularly Armenia. There, he suffered martyrdom by order of the ruler Astyages, who had his skin flayed before crucifying him. His relics were later transferred to Lipari and finally to Rome, where they rest in the church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola.
PATRONAGE:
St. Bartholomew is the patron saint of the cities of Frankfurt am Main, Maastricht, and Pilsen, as well as of the professions of butchers, tanners, farmers, and vintners. He is also invoked for skin diseases.
