BIOGRAPHY:
St. Manfred of Riva, also known as Manfredo Settala, was born in the 12th century in Milan into a noble family. After being ordained as a priest, he withdrew as a hermit to Monte San Giorgio near Riva San Vitale on Lake Lugano, where he led an ascetic life. He lived in complete solitude, surviving on herbs and dedicating his time to prayer and meditation. Numerous legends recount his miracles, including the "bread miracle," in which he transformed stones into bread during a famine to feed the people. He died on January 27, 1217. His relics are venerated in the Church of San Vitale in Riva San Vitale, and his tomb remains a site of pilgrimage to this day.
