Saint Sigisbert of Disentis was a Frankish monk who withdrew to the Alps in the 7th century to lead an ascetic life. He founded the monastery of Disentis in present-day Switzerland, which soon became an important spiritual and cultural center. According to legend, he came into conflict with the local ruler Victor of Trento, who ultimately had him executed. His work was continued by his followers, and the monastery grew into a major stronghold of the Christian mission in the region.
