BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Castulus was, according to legend, a chamberlain at the court of Roman Emperor Diocletian and a devoted Christian. Despite the persecution of Christians, he provided refuge for those in danger and secretly organized religious services within the imperial palace. Together with his friend Tiburtius, he converted many people to Christianity and led them to baptism through Pope Caius. However, his efforts did not go unnoticed: betrayed by Torquatus, St. Castulus was arrested, brutally tortured, and finally buried alive around the year 286 AD on the Via Labicana in Rome. His wife, Saint Irene, is said to have given him an honorable burial.
PATRONAGE:
St. Castulus is the patron saint of farmers and shepherds. He is also invoked against lightning, floods, animal diseases, fires, and horse theft.
