When Saint John Henry Newman lived: 1801 - 1890
BIOGRAPHY:
Saint John Henry Newman was born in London to a wealthy banking family and initially embarked on a brilliant academic and ecclesiastical career in the Church of England. As a leading figure of the "Oxford Movement," he worked intensively to renew the Anglican Church by returning to the roots of the early Church Fathers. His profound theological studies and search for unadulterated Christian truth eventually led to his conversion to Catholicism in 1845. He was ordained a priest, founded the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in England, and, due to his outstanding intellectual merits and humble service, was created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879. Newman passed away in Birmingham in 1890, leaving behind a monumental literary body of work that makes him one of the most influential theologians of the modern era.
