BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Richard of Chichester, born Richard de Wyche in Droitwich, England, came from an impoverished noble family and initially worked on his parents' farm before studying in Oxford, Paris, and Bologna. He became Chancellor of Oxford University and later Chancellor to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Edmund Rich, whose loyal companion he remained. In 1244, he was elected Bishop of Chichester, but due to disputes with King Henry III, who did not recognize the election, Richard had to serve in the diocese in poverty for two years until the King finally relented. Richard was distinguished by his great humility, his commitment to the poor, and his strict reforms of the clergy. He died in 1253 in Dover while preaching a crusade and was canonized as early as 1262 because of his miracles and exemplary life.

The symbols of Saint Richard are a book, representing his scholarship and his role as chancellor and bishop, and a chalice at his feet, which recalls a legend according to which he overturned the chalice during Mass without the wine being spilled.
