BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Martin de Porres was born on December 9, 1579, in Lima, Peru, the son of the Spanish nobleman Juan de Porres and the freed African slave Ana Velázquez. Due to his mixed-race background, he faced discrimination but chose a life of humility and service. From an early age, he displayed exceptional skill in medicine and healing. At 15, he joined the Dominican Order as a lay brother, since racial laws prevented him from full membership. He devoted himself to caring for the sick, the poor, and the outcasts of society, founding an orphanage and a hospital for children. His deep spirituality and miraculous abilities, including healings and bilocation, made him famous even during his lifetime. Saint Martin died on November 3, 1639, in Lima and was canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII.
