BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Basil, also known as St. Basil the Great, was born around 329 in Caesarea of Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey). He came from a wealthy and devout family, which produced several saints, including his siblings Macrina, Gregory of Nyssa, and Peter of Sebaste. After receiving an extensive education in rhetoric and philosophy, Saint Basil turned to asceticism and founded monasteries in Pontus. He became Bishop of Caesarea and vigorously opposed Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. St. Basil was also a prominent theologian and the author of many works, including his famous monastic rules, which are still fundamental in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He died on January 1, 379, and is revered as one of the great Fathers of the Eastern Church.
