BIOGRAPHY:
St. Callistus I was one of the early popes of the Church, serving from 217 to 222 AD. Born a slave, he was later freed and dedicated his life to the Church. He was entrusted by Pope Zephyrinus with the administration of the famous catacombs in Rome, now known as the Catacombs of St. Callistus. During his pontificate, St. Callistus I advocated for the forgiveness of sins and the reintegration of sinners into the Church, which sparked theological controversies. His papacy was marked by conflicts with the rigorist faction led by Hippolytus of Rome. He ultimately suffered martyrdom during the Christian persecutions and was buried in the Catacombs of St. Callistus.
