Memorial Day: November 9

When did Saint Roland live: 11th century AD

BIOGRAPHY:
Originally from northern France, Roland first entered the monastery of Elnon-today's St-Amand-les-Eaux-as a monk. In 1069, due to his deep piety and energy, he was elected abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Hasnon. Under his leadership, the monastery experienced an extraordinary period of prosperity; the community grew so significantly that Roland had to initiate extensive building expansions to accommodate all the monks. Throughout his life, he was revered as a wise shepherd and reformer. St. Roland died on November 9, 1084, in Hasnon; a century after his death, his body was found incorrupt, which was interpreted as a divine sign of his holiness.

PATRONAGE:
St. Roland is the patron saint of those who bear responsibility in spiritual communities, as well as a model for wise growth and steadfastness in faith.

SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of St. Roland in this depiction are the magnificent golden crosier, which signifies his ecclesiastical authority and his role as shepherd of Hasnon Abbey, and the open book in his hand, representing the Benedictine Rule and his theological scholarship.
