BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Alban was the first martyr of Britain and is venerated as one of England's most important saints. According to legend, St. Alban was a Roman soldier living in Verulamium (modern-day St Albans). He provided refuge to a persecuted Christian priest and was deeply moved by his faith. Alban converted to Christianity and allowed the priest to escape by disguising himself in his clothes and surrendering to the Roman authorities in his place. Upon discovery, St. Alban was sentenced to death and suffered martyrdom by beheading. Reports state that after his execution, a spring of water miraculously gushed forth from the place where his severed head touched the ground.
