BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Gregory VII, born Hildebrand of Sovana, was one of the most influential popes of the Middle Ages. A strong reformer, he fought for the independence of the Church from secular rule. His papacy (1073-1085) was marked by the Investiture Controversy against Emperor Henry IV. In 1077, he compelled the emperor to the famous "Walk to Canossa," a symbolic act of submission to papal authority. However, he was later expelled from Rome and died in exile in Salerno.
