BIOGRAPHY:
St. John of Nepomuk was born around 1350 in Pomuk (now Nepomuk, Czech Republic). He studied theology and canon law, later becoming the vicar general of the Archbishop of Prague. As the confessor of the Queen of Bohemia, he came into conflict with King Wenceslaus IV, who demanded that he reveal the secrets of confession. John refused and was subsequently tortured and thrown from the Charles Bridge into the Vltava River on March 20, 1393. He was venerated as a martyr of the confessional seal and canonized in 1729.
