BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Lambert of Maastricht was born around the year 636 in Maastricht. He came from a wealthy family and was a nephew of Bishop Theodard of Maastricht, who educated him. After the murder of his uncle around 669, Lambert became his successor as Bishop of Maastricht. During political unrest, he was deposed in 675 by Ebroin, the mayor of the palace of Neustria, and spent seven years in exile at the monastery of Stablo. After the takeover by Pepin of Herstal, he returned to his office in 681. Lambert openly criticized Pepin's relationship with his mistress Alpaida, which led to his assassination on September 17, around 705, in Liège. He is considered a martyr for defending marital fidelity. His remains were later transferred to the Cathedral of Saint Lambert in Liège, where he is still venerated today.
