BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Maurus, also known as San Maurus, was born around 512 as the son of the Roman senator Equitius. As a child, he was entrusted to the care of Saint Benedict of Nursia and became one of his first and most devoted disciples. According to legend, he saved his fellow monk Placidus from drowning by walking on water at Benedict's command. This miracle made him a prominent figure in Benedictine tradition. He later became prior of the monastery at Subiaco before Benedict sent him to Gaul to establish the monastery of Glanfeuil (now Saint-Maur-sur-Loire). He introduced the Benedictine rule there and was venerated as a holy abbot. Saint Maurus died on January 15, 584, in Glanfeuil.
PATRONAGE:
St. Maurus is the patron saint of the sick, especially those suffering from gout, rheumatism, and epilepsy. He is also the patron of shoemakers, coppersmiths, charcoal burners, and the Azores.
