BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Emma came from Saxony (Germany) and grew up in aristocratic circumstances. Together with Liudger, son of the Saxon duke Hermann Billung, she had a son named Imad. After her husband died on a trip to Russia, she devoted herself to charitable work. Her charity was reflected in the establishment of numerous foundations for churches. Her contributions to Bremen Cathedral are particularly notable. She also founded her own church in Stiepel, which became an important place of pilgrimage. According to legend, her right hand, which she used for prayers, remained intact when she fell apart.
PATRONAGE:
St. Emma is the patron saint of the city of Bremen and of the poor.
