BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Lucy, born in Syracuse (Sicily), came from a wealthy family, although she lost her father at a very early age. She consecrated her virginity to God at a young age and refused to marry. Her mother, however, took no notice of this and arranged a marriage for her. When she prayed at the tomb of St. Agatha and asked for her mother's healing, a turning point in her life occurred. Her mother's recovery convinced her to donate the family fortune to the poor. This enabled her to remain faithful to her vow. However, as she refused to marry the pagan bridegroom, she was first sentenced to rape, which failed with divine assistance, and finally sealed her fate with a sword.
According to one legend, her eyes were removed as torture before she died. According to another tradition, she tore out her own eyes to ward off the advances of a persistent admirer.
PATRONAGE:
St. Lucy is the patron saint of the blind, authors, martyrs and craftsmen.

The symbols of San Lucy are a bowl with eyes, which refers to her legend, a palm branch as a recognized sign of martyrdom, and lilies, which emphasize her purity and innocence.
