BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Leonard of Noblac, also known as Leonard of Limoges, was a Frankish nobleman who grew up at the court of the Merovingians. He was educated by Saint Remigius, Bishop of Reims, and chose to dedicate his life to the Christian faith. He was particularly moved by the plight of prisoners and worked to secure their release. King Clovis offered him a prestigious position at court, but Leonard preferred a life of solitude near Limoges. There, he founded a monastery, which later became the Abbey of Noblac. Saint Leonard became known for his piety and miraculous intercessions, particularly in freeing captives. His veneration spread throughout medieval Europe, especially in Bavaria, Austria, and South Tyrol, where he is honored as the patron saint of livestock.
PATRONAGE:
St. Leonard is the patron saint of prisoners, horses, farmers, stable hands, blacksmiths, and shepherds. He is also invoked for assistance in childbirth.
