BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Matthew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, is mentioned in all apostolic lists of the New Testament. Before his calling, he worked as a tax collector in Capernaum, a city on the Sea of Galilee. Tax collectors were despised by the Jewish people as they served the Roman occupation. According to the Gospel, Jesus saw Matthew at the tax booth and called him to follow. Without hesitation, Matthew left his post and became one of Jesus' closest disciples. According to tradition, he wrote the first Gospel of the New Testament, known as the Gospel of Matthew. It is believed that he originally wrote it in Hebrew. After the resurrection of Jesus, he preached in various regions, and according to different sources, he was martyred in Ethiopia, Persia, or Parthia.

St. Matthew is the patron saint of accountants, tax collectors, bankers, and financial officers, in reference to his former profession.
