When did Saint Pantaleon live: AD 275 - 305
BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Pantaleon was born around AD 275 in Nicomedia (modern-day Izmit, Turkey), the son of the pagan Eustorgius and the Christian Eubula. After his mother's early death, he drifted away from Christianity and studied medicine under the renowned physician Euphrosinos. Due to his extraordinary talent, he became the personal physician of Emperor Maximian. However, through the guidance of the priest Hermolaus, San Pantaleon returned to the faith and recognized Christ as the true healer. To prove the power of Jesus, he healed a blind man, leading to his father's conversion. After his father's death, he distributed his inheritance to the poor and freed his slaves. During the Diocletianic Persecution, envious colleagues denounced him. Despite multiple attempts to force him to renounce his faith, he remained steadfast and even healed a paralytic in front of his persecutors. Eventually, he was executed in AD 305 after several failed attempts to kill him, which were seen as miraculous.
PATRONAGE:
St. Pantaleon is the patron saint of doctors, midwives, and nurses. He is invoked against headaches, lung diseases, and to comfort crying children.
