BIOGRAPHY:
St. Marcellus the Soldier, also known as Marcellus of Tangier, was a Roman centurion born in the mid-3rd century. While serving in Tingis, modern-day Tangier in Morocco, he refused to take part in the emperor Maximian's birthday celebrations, as they involved sacrifices to Roman gods. He publicly cast aside his military insignia, declaring that he could serve only God. He was brought before the judge Fortunatus and later the deputy praetorian prefect Aurelius Agricolanus. Marcellus admitted to rejecting loyalty to the emperor and was sentenced to death and executed on October 30, 298. His relics were later transferred to León, Spain, where he is venerated as the patron saint of the city and province.
