Saint Waltraud, born in Cousolre (France), came from a distinguished family. Despite impeccably fulfilling her marital and family duties, Waltraud felt a deep calling to devote her life completely to God. After her marriage, she withdrew into the silence of a monastery and founded the Benedictine monastery in Mons, which quickly developed into a center of spiritual life.

St. Waltraud is the patron saint of the towns of Mons and Soignies in Belgium; of widows.
