BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Zita, born in La Colla (Italy), worked for years as a maid for the Fatinelli family in Lucca. She enjoyed the status of a saint, particularly because of her efforts on behalf of the poor and needy. According to legend, her master confronted her because he suspected that Zita was stealing his bread. When the basket was opened, the loaves are said to have turned into flowers.
PATRONAGE:
St. Zita is the patron saint of servants, housewives, bakers, lost keys and houses.
SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of San Zita are a cauldron to signify her role in the kitchen, a bunch of keys to emphasize her responsibility as a housekeeper, a broom to emphasize her precision at work, and a spoon, which represents her task of preparing meals.
