BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica was an early Christian martyr, born into a wealthy family in Thessalonica. As an officer in the Roman army, he openly professed his Christian faith despite the persecutions under Emperor Maximian. Because of his beliefs, he was arrested and executed. A church was later built over his grave, which became the famous Basilica of St. Demetrius. Shortly after his death, he was venerated as a saint, and many miracles were attributed to him.
