BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Edwin was the King of Northumbria and played a vital role in the Christianization of England. Initially a pagan ruler, he converted to Christianity through his marriage to the Christian princess Æthelburg of Kent and the influence of the missionary Paulinus. In 627, St. Edwin was baptized in York and helped spread Christianity across his kingdom. Under his rule, Northumbria flourished both politically and culturally. He died in 633 at the Battle of Hatfield Chase against an alliance of Penda of Mercia and Cadwallon of Gwynedd. His death was regarded as martyrdom, as he died defending his faith and his realm.
