BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Egbert of York was an important clergyman of the 8th century and Archbishop of York. Born around 678, he was consecrated Archbishop in 732 and played a central role in the religious renewal of Northern England. He promoted monastic life, the education of the clergy, and the construction of churches. As a scholar and patron of the sciences, he commissioned the copying of valuable manuscripts and supported York's famous library. Saint Egbert was also an advisor to Anglo-Saxon kings and worked for ecclesiastical discipline and liturgical order. He died on November 19, 766, and is venerated as a saint.
