BIOGRAPHY:
St. Otto of Bamberg was born around 1060 in Swabia. After his education, he initially served as a chaplain at the Polish court and later as chancellor under Emperor Henry IV. In 1102, he was appointed bishop of Bamberg. During his tenure, he founded or reformed over 30 monasteries, colleges, and hospitals across various regions. He became particularly famous for his missionary journeys to Pomerania in 1124/25 and 1128, converting many people to Christianity, earning him the title "Apostle of Pomerania." He died on June 30, 1139, in Bamberg and was canonized in 1189.
PATRONAGE:
Patron saint of the Archdiocese of Bamberg and the Diocese of Szczecin-Kamien, as well as co-patron of the Archdiocese of Berlin. He is also invoked against fever and rabies.
