BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Leo I, known as Leo the Great, was born around the year 400 in Tuscany, Italy. Before his election as pope, he served as archdeacon under Pope Celestine I and gained high esteem for his theological and diplomatic skills. On September 29, 440, he was elected pope. During his pontificate, he worked tirelessly for the unity of the Church and combated various heresies, including Pelagianism and Manichaeism. He is famous for his meeting with Attila the Hun in 452, where he persuaded Attila to turn back, thus preventing the sacking of Rome. He also played a decisive role in the Council of Chalcedon in 451, where his "Tome" significantly contributed to the formulation of Christological doctrine. Leo authored numerous sermons and letters that have been preserved to this day. He died on November 10, 461, in Rome and was buried in St. Peter's Basilica. In 1754, he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XIV.
