BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Mechthild was a descendant of the legendary Saxon duke Widukind, but grew up under the care of her grandmother and enjoyed a good education. In 909, she married King Henry I, with whom she had five children. She was crowned queen, but after his death in 936 she increasingly devoted herself to charitable and spiritual tasks. Matilda founded several important monasteries and was accused by her son Henry of squandering money from the throne. Legend has it that she received a divine vision during a trip to Rome to build a church in Acquapendente instead of Rome, which testifies to her great trust in God's judgment.

St. Mechthild is the patron saint of large families, widows and mothers.
