Saint Gertrude is the only German saint to be nicknamed "the Great". She entered the Helfta monastery at the age of five, where she was educated by the abbess Gertrude von Hackeborn. Her education included the seven liberal arts and theological subjects, which served as the basis for her later work. At the age of 25, a vision of Christ transformed her from a scholar of the book to a scholar of God.
