BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Dorothea of Montau developed deep religious inclinations at a young age and began extreme self-mortification. Her first mystical vision of Jesus is said to have occurred during her early childhood penance exercises. At the age of 16, she married the much older armorer Adalbert from Danzig and had nine children with him, only one of whom reached adulthood. The marriage was characterized by violence and a lack of understanding, especially regarding her visions and religious practices. But despite the difficulties, she remained true to her spiritual path and undertook several pilgrimages through Europe even after her husband's death. When she was suspected of witchcraft in 1391, she decided to spend her last years as a recluse at the cathedral in Marienwerder (present-day Poland).
