BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Monica, born in Thagaste (present-day Algeria), grew up in a wealthy Christian family in Roman North Africa. She married a temperamental and unfaithful husband, whom she was able to convert with great devotion, which is why he was baptized shortly before his death. Her eldest son Augustine first led a dissolute life, but was then also converted by Monika. One of their famous quotes accurately describes their relationship: "The child of so many tears cannot be lost". While traveling to Rome and Milan, she met Bishop Ambrose; tragically, she died on her way back to Africa.
