BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Rose, born in Peru, was the first saint of the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church. She strictly rejected any marriage plans of her parents and instead devoted herself completely to the worship of Jesus. To this end, she lived in the strictest asceticism, which resulted in her sleeping on broken pieces of glass. Her parents' garden served both as a place of prayer and to help those in need.
PATRONAGE:
St. Rose is the patron saint of Peru, South America and the Philippines; of gardeners, flower growers, florists, the mocked and of family life.
SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of San Rose are a book as a sign of her wisdom, a feather which emphasizes her role as a mystic and writer, a crown of roses which stands for her purity and love, and the infant Jesus which emphasizes her relationship with the Lord.
