BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Oliver Plunkett was born on November 1, 1625, in Loughcrew, County Meath, Ireland. He came from a distinguished Irish family and showed an early calling to the priesthood. Due to religious persecution in Ireland, he traveled to Rome in 1647 to study at the Irish College. In 1654, he was ordained a priest at the Church of the Propaganda Fide.
After his ordination, St. Oliver Plunkett remained in Rome, teaching theology at the College of the Propaganda Fide. In 1669, he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. Despite ongoing religious tensions, he returned to Ireland in 1670 and dedicated himself to reorganizing the Catholic Church. He founded schools, ordained priests, and administered the sacrament of confirmation to thousands.
With the intensification of persecution in 1673, St. Oliver Plunkett was forced to work underground. In 1679, he was arrested and falsely accused of high treason. After an unjust trial in London, he was sentenced to death and executed on July 1, 1681, in Tyburn. He was beatified in 1920 and canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1975.
